Dr. Margherita Cadeddu is Associate Director of St. Joseph’s Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS) and associate professor in the Department of Surgery at McMaster. Margherita’s experience as faculty in general surgery and with CMAS, having provided training and equipment to surgical professionals in Guyana, will allow MacGLOBAS identify new opportunities for endoscopy and minimally invasive procedures in low-resource settings.

Dr. Cameron has been involved in MacGLOBASsince its conceptualization. Having formed the International Surgery Desk within the Department of Surgery at McMaster, and having worked in Fiji, Guyana, and Uganda, in surgical training, educational development, and research, Dr. Cameron understood the huge need to approach global surgeryfrom an interdisciplinary perspective. Helping to bring together stakeholders from the three surgical departments, allied health disciplines, and Global Health Office – Brianhas helped bring trainees from Guyana and Uganda to participate in world-class training, engage in research, and collaborate with fellow faculty and researchers at the university. Briancontinues to be engaged in Global Surgery as the Director of MacGLOBAS, as well as supporting both faculty from McMaster interested in Global Surgery, and faculty and residents from international partner institutions in Guyana and Uganda.

Dr. Jean Chamberlain - Executive Committee Member

Dr. Jean Chamberlain is an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster, and 2014 recipient of the Order of Canada. Since completing her training in Obstetrics and joining the faculty at McMaster, she has worked as an obstetrician in Yemen, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Pakistan. Through her work she recognized the global tragedy of maternal mortality, and while living in Uganda between 2005 and 2017, she founded the non-profit Save the Mothers, to help address the many causes of maternal mortality.

Dr. Chamberlain continues to regularly travel to Uganda and delivers training to local health providers in helping to prevent maternal mortality.

Dr. Alez Dauphin - Executive Committee Member

Dr. Alezandre (Alez) Dauphin is an Anesthesiologist and clinical professor at McMaster University. Alex has worked with Canadian Anesthesia Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF), in Guyana, to develop the country’s first Anesthesia residency program, as well as mentored visiting Anesthesiology residents from Guyana, Haiti, and Uganda. Dr. Dauphin has been a long-time proponent of the MacGLOBAS collaborative concept, helping to gain the support from the Department of Anesthesia, with Drs. Joel Hamstra and Anne Wong.

Dr. Lorraine Elit - Executive Committee Member

Dr. Laurie Elit is a surgeon specialized in gynecological cancer, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and cross-appointed in the Department of Oncology. She is a member of the humanitarian health ethics (hhe) research group, a collaboration between researchers and clinicians that addresses unique ethical issues faced in the humanitarian context. Joining MacGLOBAS’s leadership, Laurie will be able to share her experience as an gynecologic cancer surgeon and researcher in LMICs, and her work with the hhe research group.

Dr. Joel Hamstra - Executive Committee Member

Dr. Joel Hamstra is an Anesthesiologist at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton and assistant clinical professor in the Department of Anesthesia at McMaster. Dr. Hamstra joins MacGLOBAS having worked in Guyana with the Canadian Anesthesia Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF), in the development and implementation of Guyana’s first Anesthesia Residency program.

Dr. Carolyn Levis - Executive Committee Member

Dr. Carolyn Levis is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at McMaster University. Carolyn has worked in Guatemala and Ukraine, Haiti, Honduras and Ecuador performing hand and microsurgery for populations without access. She received the Ukraine Order of Merit for her work providing surgery to injured Ukrainian soldiers in 2015. Joining MacGLOBAS in 2018 as a member of the Executive Committee, Carolyn’s experience in initiatives with physical therapy will help MacGLOBAS in developing collaborative interdisciplinary projects with the different surgical specialists and allied health disciplines.

Dr. Mark Osmond - Executive Committee Member

Dr. Mark Osmond recently joined the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, previously working as a consultant in high risk Obstetrics at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust in the UK. He did his medical degree at University College London and subsequent training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of London, attaining membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in the UK. During his training, he did clinical work and field research in global maternal health, particularly the prevention and treatment of post-partum hemorrhage in rural Uganda, East Africa. He later did his fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Toronto and has returned to Uganda and Congo several times for short-term medical work.

Before clinical training, Dr Osmond did a PhD in embryology, studying cell and tissue interactions involved in the development of different organ systems in experimental models. He still maintains an interest in this area, as well as in global maternal, fetal and neonatal health, joining the MacGlObAS executive with an interest in developing the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department's international role.

Dr. Anne Wong - Executive Committee Member

Dr. Anne Wong is Assistant Dean in the Program for Faculty Development in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at McMaster University. Anne has worked in Guyana with fellow faculty from the Department of Anesthesia helping to transform their 2-year Anesthesia diploma program in a 4-year residency program and facilitate faculty develop in collaboration with the Canadian Anesthesia Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF). Her background, interests and previous work with Dr. Brian Cameron (McMaster Department of Surgery) have led her to join in the conceptualization of a collaborative between the three departments and the formation of MacGLOBAS.
